A.F. Thompson Manufacturing

West Edge is the former home of A.F. Thompson Mfg. Company, which constructed the factory in 1930, and operated until the mid 1960's. A factory, one of two, created by an interesting entrepreneur, A.F. Thompson, later operated by his son Cecil C. Thompson who also served as mayor of the City of Huntington!

Gallery: Do you remember? -- Jan. 31, 2011, Political rally for U.S. Sen. Robert Taft of Ohio

A political rally for U.S. Sen. Robert A. Taft (R-Ohio). Taft won three terms in office, from Jan. 3, 1939, until his death July 31, 1953. His father was President William Howard Taft. His grandson, Robert Taft, was governor of Ohio from 1999 to 2007. According to David Karickhoff of Huntington, on the far right is former Sen. W. Chapman Revercomb (R, 1943-49). Second from right is Taft. On the other side of Taft is Cecil Thompson, former Huntington mayor and civic leader. His wife, Eileen, is shaking hands with Borge Rosing, vice president of West Virginia Steel. Thanks to Joe Amsbary for the identifications. The lady in the front is unidentified.

Eventually abandoned, it became a base for clandestine scrap operations, looters stripping wires and piping by night; the city of Huntington, and neighborhood of Westmoreland had a problem on their hands...
